Norway: Lyngen and Finnmark Alps

Accueil / Expédition / Norway: Lyngen and Finnmark Alps

A route shaped by the landscape

Travelling from south to north, we will pass through the major Alpine ranges along the Norwegian coast:

  • The Lyngen Alps and the islands or peninsulas best suited to skiing
  • The Finnmark mountain range, Norway’s northernmost mountainous region, which rises to 1,190 metres from the Arctic ice cap
  • Then the return to Tromsø via the southern part of the Lyngen Alps,

Depending on conditions, other superb options may be added:

  • the north-east of the Lofoten Islands, dominated by Stetinden, Norway’s iconic mountain,
  • the island of Senja, still wild and spectacular,
  • or other hidden valleys where the snow lingers for a long time.

Our only guiding principle: to maximise the quality of the experience, without being tied to a rigid itinerary.

Being willing to go with the weather, the snow and the moment… c

Why this period?

In our view, mid-March is the best time to enjoy:

  • long days, without it being constantly light;
  • the chance to see the Northern Lights, sometimes even whilst hiking beneath their green glow;
  • snow still lying by the sea, meaning no need to carry your gear (a real luxury when you’re out for several days in a row);
  • a unique, luminous atmosphere: endless twilights, soft contrasts, sea mist…

Required level

This trip is designed for skiers who already have considerable experience in alpine terrain:

  • proficiency in turning on all types of slopes and snow conditions,
  • confidence when descending in all types of conditions,
  • daily elevation gains of 800 to 1,400 metres,
  • Routes that do not involve glaciers but may require the use of techniques and methods specific to advanced ski mountaineering.
